Overview

An annotated bibliography is a combination assignment: it blends MLA reference citations with paragraphs–or annotations–that help you, and your readers, make sense of the sources you cite. For this assignment, you will be asked to create annotations that summarize, assess, and reflect upon sources related to your research topic (See Assignment Guide). This process serves two purposes: it provides you with a broader perspective of your research topic, and it prompts you to develop your own point of view: your thesis.

Requirements

Length/Sources:

This assignment requires 5 reliable and credible sources with annotations. The minimum word count is 750 words total, with 150 words per source annotation. *If the minimum word count is not met, your assignment will be returned with no grade and a resubmission will be required.

Organization
Each of the five sources should include an annotation with the following four components: a citation, a summary paragraph, an assessment paragraph, and a reflection paragraph.

Be sure to use summary here, with no direct quotes.

You’ll want to stick to third-person language in this section (no “I, me, we, you, us, our”).

Assessment

*Think of this as providing readers with proof that the source is, or is not, useful.

In this paragraph, you will evaluate the source, noting whether it is useful, and why. You can discuss reliability and credibility, author expertise, date of publication, bias or objectivity, and intended audience. You can also compare/contrast this source with other sources that you have collected, if you find that analysis helpful.

Be sure to use paraphrase here, with no direct quotes.

Reflection

*Think of this as presenting readers with your perspective.

In this paragraph, you will share how this source impacts your writing process. Did this source cause you to change your stance? Did you learn anything new or interesting about your topic? How might you use this source in your future essay?

You can feel free to use first-person language here, since you are sharing your own insights about this source and its relationship to your research topic. Be sure to stick to “I, me” language, though, as you don’t want to make assumptions about your readers.

Tertiary sources, such as online encyclopedias, dictionaries and Wikipedia, are not scholarly sources, and should not be cited within your work; however, they may offer helpful foundational information as you develop your understanding of an issue. TOPIC of the interview is: Obesity particularly in Obstetrics patients.

Now that your project team has identified a health care need in the community that is of critical importance to address, as well as the populations or groups that are most impacted, the project team has been asked to seek out leaders and experts in the health care field to interview. The purpose of the interview is to gather an overview of the various approaches and best practices that are currently in use for improving the quality of care and outcomes related to the health care need and populations for the project.

Instructions
For your part, you will conduct an interview with a health care administrator or selected health care professional regarding their organization’s approach to the health care need and the highly impacted subgroups you identified in Assessment 1: Identifying Community Health Needs. The focus of your questions should be on how the professional’s health care institution or organization is addressing the concerns of the identified health care need and impacted subgroups relative to the National CLAS Standards.

As you gather information, you will want to make sure you are getting both a big-picture view of how the organization is culturally and linguistically adept and also how it is addressing the subgroups of the population that have a higher prevalence of the identified health issue. Carrying through with our example from the first assessment, if you had identified that heart disease was an issue for your community or state, you might ask questions such as:

What methods does your organization use to ensure that communications between the health care providers and patients are effective for a diverse population?
What kind of accommodations or considerations does your organization provide for the elderly population?
How does your organization balance preventative health promotion and education approaches in the community with time-of-care strategies to improve health care quality and outcomes?
For this assessment, you will develop a concise but comprehensive summary of your interview and the approach of the organization to improving the quality of care and outcomes for the population and health care need. Be sure you are including references to the National CLAS Standards in your report. The bullet points below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Be sure that your submission addresses all of them. You may also want to read the Interview of Health Care Professional Scoring Guide to better understand how each grading criterion will be assessed.

Additional Requirements
Length of submission: 3–5 typed, double-spaced pages, not including the title and reference pages. Your interview summary should be thorough, but concise. No abstract is required for this assessment.
Number of references: Cite a minimum of 3–5 sources of scholarly or professional evidence that support your explanations, as well as the identification of strengths and challenges. Make sure that the National CLAS Standards is one of the resources you are citing. Resources should predominantly be no more than five years old; the National CLAS Standards can be an exception to this.
APA formatting: Use the APA Style Paper Tutorial [DOCX] to help you in writing and formatting your analysis.

2. Analyze your approach to fostering collaboration and motivation among stakeholders. Consider:
o How well you facilitated member or participant collaboration and engagement with one another. Did participants communicate effectively?
o Actions you took to motivate people to realize your vision or tactics. Did the team or participants feel motivated and energized by you? Why or why not?

Imagine that your boss Lynnette follows up with you in an email shortly after reading your views on leadership and collaboration:

Hi,

Thanks for sending me your thoughts last week on the diversity issue at the clinic. Your next step is to select a team of professionals who can help you in this project and prepare an introduction of the project for a first meeting with them.

I want you to prepare a presentation to serve as a brief but substantive introduction for the first meeting with a group of 4–5 members who will participate on the committee tasked with addressing the diversity issue. Once I review more information about the proposed team I can help you with the recruitment. The presentation should be 5–7 minutes and use 6–8 slides with detailed speaker’s notes so I can understand your approach. Not a lot of time or space, so keep things pretty high level. Do the following:

Briefly outline the project goals and highlight 2–3 of the initial priorities to be addressed by the group. Also, explain why they are important.
Explain the composition of the team and why you chose them. Note that you will not know the exact individuals yet, but assume we will recruit the people with the desired qualities and characteristics you outline in the presentation. Consider the following:

For this assessment:

Create a 6–8 slide PowerPoint presentation in response to the content defined in the above scenario.

Your assessment should also meet the following requirements:

Length: 6–8 PowerPoint slides (not including title slide) that would accompany a 5–7 minute oral presentation. (The oral presentation will be given separately).
Notes: Prepare detailed speaker’s notes describing items on each slide so that the viewer can accurately interpret the deeper meanings and intentions that would have been conveyed orally. Support your claims, arguments, and conclusions with credible evidence from 2–3 current, scholarly or professional sources.
