Interview of a healthcare professional

TOPIC of the interview is: Obesity particularly in Obstetrics patients.

Now that your project team has identified a health care need in the community that is of critical importance to address, as well as the populations or groups that are most impacted, the project team has been asked to seek out leaders and experts in the health care field to interview. The purpose of the interview is to gather an overview of the various approaches and best practices that are currently in use for improving the quality of care and outcomes related to the health care need and populations for the project.

Instructions
For your part, you will conduct an interview with a health care administrator or selected health care professional regarding their organization’s approach to the health care need and the highly impacted subgroups you identified in Assessment 1: Identifying Community Health Needs. The focus of your questions should be on how the professional’s health care institution or organization is addressing the concerns of the identified health care need and impacted subgroups relative to the National CLAS Standards.

As you gather information, you will want to make sure you are getting both a big-picture view of how the organization is culturally and linguistically adept and also how it is addressing the subgroups of the population that have a higher prevalence of the identified health issue. Carrying through with our example from the first assessment, if you had identified that heart disease was an issue for your community or state, you might ask questions such as:

What methods does your organization use to ensure that communications between the health care providers and patients are effective for a diverse population?
What kind of accommodations or considerations does your organization provide for the elderly population?
How does your organization balance preventative health promotion and education approaches in the community with time-of-care strategies to improve health care quality and outcomes?
For this assessment, you will develop a concise but comprehensive summary of your interview and the approach of the organization to improving the quality of care and outcomes for the population and health care need. Be sure you are including references to the National CLAS Standards in your report. The bullet points below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Be sure that your submission addresses all of them. As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.

This assessment will be based around obtaining and reviewing community and public health data in order to determine a health need that should be addressed. The focus will be on how you use data to determine health care concerns, communities, and populations to proactively treat. Think about experiences you may have had working with data, as well as community and population health roles.

Scenario

The organization in which you practice is embarking on a new project to better understand the health care needs of the various populations in the community that it serves. You have been asked to join the project to represent your nursing role group. In the first stage of the project, you have been asked to examine community and state demographics to start identifying patterns and trends that can help inform health care practices and improve quality patient outcomes. It has been suggested that the project team begin by searching out relevant government agencies and resources that will help you locate the demographics for either your community or your state. Specifically, you have been asked to look for information regarding demographic makeup, including ethnicity and levels of illness and health status.

It has been noted that many of these resources should be freely available online.

Instructions

As you examine the information that you are collecting, identify a health care need that is currently a concern in your community or state. For example, perhaps you find that your state has one of the highest rates of heart disease in the nation. Once you have identified the health care need in your community, do further exploration to see whether certain groups or populations within your diverse community or state are impacted by this health care need more than others. In our example, elderly and Native American populations are two groups that have a higher prevalence of heart disease.

Appropriately identifying the highly impacted subgroups within your community or state is a key component of this assessment, as you will continue to reference these groups for the upcoming assessments as well.

For this assessment you will develop a concise but comprehensive report of the demographic makeup of the community you have decided to focus upon, as well as the most significant health concerns. Be sure you are linking the health concerns you are identifying to specific demographic groups within your chosen community. The bullet points below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Be sure that your submission addresses all of them. You may also want to read the Identifying Community Health Needs Scoring Guide to better understand how each grading criterion will be assessed.

In your report, make sure to complete the following:

Describe demographic characteristics for your community or state in terms of demographic makeup, ethnicity, and illness and health status.

Diversity presentation

Imagine that your boss Lynnette follows up with you in an email shortly after reading your views on leadership and collaboration:

Hi,

Thanks for sending me your thoughts last week on the diversity issue at the clinic. Your next step is to select a team of professionals who can help you in this project and prepare an introduction of the project for a first meeting with them.

I want you to prepare a presentation to serve as a brief but substantive introduction for the first meeting with a group of 4–5 members who will participate on the committee tasked with addressing the diversity issue. Once I review more information about the proposed team I can help you with the recruitment. The presentation should be 5–7 minutes and use 6–8 slides with detailed speaker’s notes so I can understand your approach. Not a lot of time or space, so keep things pretty high level. Do the following:

Briefly outline the project goals and highlight 2–3 of the initial priorities to be addressed by the group. Also, explain why they are important.
Explain the composition of the team and why you chose them. Note that you will not know the exact individuals yet, but assume we will recruit the people with the desired qualities and characteristics you outline in the presentation. Consider the following:
Include a group of professionals you believe can help define the problem and ultimately make recommendations on how to address it.
Make sure each member is either trained in, sensitive to, or has experience with the concept of workplace diversity.
Give some thought to having some members from outside the organization.
Provide member profiles: their diversity, qualifications, experience, internal versus external, and so forth.
Explain your role and describe how the committee will work together and achieve effective interprofessional collaboration.
Describe how the group will communicate. How and when they will meet.
Describe how ideas will be shared and decisions made.
Describe roles, group function, and structure.
Describe the basic characteristics of a diverse workplace.
Provide a convincing argument regarding the benefits of a diverse workforce using support from current research.

Length: 6–8 PowerPoint slides (not including title slide) that would accompany a 5–7 minute oral presentation. (The oral presentation will be given separately).

Use the following scenario as a basis to complete Assessment 2.
Imagine that you work in a health care facility and your boss has just stopped by your office and says the following:
Hi, I just have a couple of minutes – please forgive me for stopping in without advanced notice. One of the results of a recent employee survey at Lakeland Clinic indicates we have some issues to address. The data show 75% of the employees have concerns about at least one of the following: diversity issues, workplace incivility, and poor work- life balance.
Senior leadership has asked me how I plan to respond, and my first inclination is to put you in charge of assembling a team to address one of the issues. You have demonstrated effective organizational and communication on other projects and I think you will be a great asset as we move forward.

Subsequent Email
Thanks for talking with me this morning. I just want you to know that this is really a great opportunity for you. I know you have been interested in taking steps to becoming a leader in this organization and now it’s time to realize your potential.
As you know we opened the Lakeland Medical Clinic to serve area residents who were unable or unwilling to use the services offered at the main hospital. The first two months of operation saw strong patient volume. Since then, the numbers have dropped off dramatically. This prompted leadership to start asking some questions, which lead to the internal survey that I mentioned yesterday.
I just met with leadership and they determined that the priority right now is the diversity issue because we have the opportunity to improve outcomes for both employees and the community.
This is part of an email I got from the clinic director last week:
“. . . after careful examination of all aspects of the organization and talking with some neighborhood leaders we have concluded that residents in the community do not feel comfortable coming to the clinic. It seems the staff are lacking the ability to develop a trusting relationship with the residents primarily because they do not understand the cultural values and norms. The neighborhood residents, which you know are predominantly Haitian, often feel their beliefs, values, and health practices are not understood.

When staff members were hired, we only considered their past work experiences, education and potential. We may have failed to fully consider their ability to work with diverse populations.“
Hopefully, the information gives you a better understanding of the issues to be addressed. Time to get started as things need to move quickly.
I want you to assemble a committee to clearly define the problem and ultimately provide guidance on solutions. Before introducing you to the clinic director and executive team, I want to review your approach specific to leadership style and collaboration.
I want two things from you in a written document. The first part is just for me, but the second part I intend to share with the clinic director.
First, identify and describe a leader you would choose to lead a project like this and explain why. It can be anyone that is qualified, even someone famous. Your choice will tell me a lot about your leadership approach and priorities. Next, select one of the characteristics that make them successful and compare it against your leadership skills.
The second item is related to leading and fostering teamwork and collaboration among a group of interdisciplinary professionals. We are looking for 4–6 members to serve on a committee who will be considering the diversity issue and ultimately making a recommendation on how to address it.
I want you to:
• Describe your role and approach to leading the group. How will you lead and communicate? Will you be an authoritative, collaborative, democratic, servant, or transformational type of leader? Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of your approach in the context of thisproject.

Remember this information will be shared with the clinic director so keep it clear, focused, and professional. Creativity is important; however, we want to be sure that your ideas and approaches align with current health care organization trends and practices, so include references from current academic or professional resources to support your points.
